My experience: Sometime in 2003 I needed to edit some images and no one would give me a Photoshop license. A little Googling led me to GIMP. The features are very similar to Photoshop with mild differences. Where GIMP excels is the vast array of community-produced add-ins, filters, and more. The interface can be spread across multiple monitors and is easily customized for an immersive user experience. This application has been around for 20+ years, so it’s very stable.
